All of you with these 'chicken fears', do you know that I grew up right outside of town on the 12th hole of a golf course? My parents never let us have any pets and now I have 45 chickens and then some. I have to say that sometimes when they look right at you it is hard not to imagine them jumping on you to peck at you but hey, you press on and they are quite interesting little creatures. They are also quite interesting to watch, especially with 3 different age chickens interacting with each other.

This is one thing that I am not so sure about just yet but we will see. There are a few ornery ones that I wouldn't be so sad about losing so maybe later this summer I will invite you over for a homestyle BBQ
Later I will post some actual pics of my chickens. They are really cute and beautiful, not like the ones on the trucks.

okay kim, you asked for it: here's my chicken horror story.
you know my parents. they used to be hobby, odd farmers. we had just enough animals to be annoying yet not be a real farm.
we had chickens and we had a REALLY MEAN rooster. i mean, MEAN! my brothers had to hit it across the chicken yard with a 2 X 4 just to get in to feed and collect the eggs.
so one day, (i was only 3ish), my mom and i went out to do the chores and we went into the chicken yard. i immediately became terrified of the rooster and said something like, "mama, that roosters gonna get me." my mom replied, "no he's not honey, just stay by me." clinging to her pant leg i mumbled, "he's looking at me funny!" "oh heidi, relax."
then it happened. he ran at me full speed flew up and stuck his claws or what ever the HE** they were into my little meaty thighs and scraped his way down my legs!!
he was our supper the next night.
you are truly a farmers wife to post a cute little picture of chicks and right after it a plate of fried chicken! Congratulations!
I can't wait to see pictures of your chickens! By the end of the summer I have a feeling you won't mind eating several of your chickens!
Heidi-I am so sorry for you. I have heard that about roosters and that is why I don't have any. All the cousins and neighbors like to go see the chickens and get the eggs so the last thing I need is a crazy, mean rooster scarring the little kids for life. There is one hen (a teenager) that looks at me sometimes and I think she will be the first one I try out the axe on.
The 'ole bitties' are the 1 year olds, the 'teenagers' are the ones from easter and the 'babies' are the newest ones that are just a month or so old.
I think I was always scared of my aunts chickens as well. I was also the 'city kid' so I didn't know squat about anything on the farm.
You crack me up with those two pictures! ...But...did you say BBQ...and what day and time was that again.
Brylie talks about your chicks all the time! We will have to come see the new ones. She would also like another "special egg" from the chicken. She couldn't understand why she couldn't keep it forever!
It sounds like there are no rascals gettin' those chickens this year. I'm glad for that. You must be learning as you go.
I'm feeling quite left out that we can't make that BBQ. I guess we will just have to have our own here in MI to celebrate with you.
We did babysit a couple chicks over the weekend when the kids were little. They brought them home from school in a shoebox. That was enough for me. It ranked right up there with the miniture gerbel that was sent home as a birthday party take-home-treat in the MacDonald happy meal box. That mother was nuts! Who in there right minds sends 12 little girls home with a gerbel as a prize? How was I going to tell my child that she couldn't keep it? that was the beginning of our little pet named "Snickers" the mini-gerbel.
